Are you planning your first visit to London? It's a vibrant and unique city with a lot of history and culture. To make sure your trip goes as smoothly as possible, here are 20 must know London tips!
Visiting London for the first time is an exciting adventure filled with iconic landmarks, world-class museums, and a vibrant mix of history and modern culture. However, navigating this sprawling metropolis can be overwhelming, especially if you’re unfamiliar with its transport system, etiquette, and hidden gems.
From mastering the Tube to knowing where to find the best local eats, a little preparation can go a long way in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience.
In this list, I’ll share essential tips that every first-time visitor to London should know, helping you avoid common pitfalls and make the most of your trip to this incredible city.
These tips will help you make the most of your time in London which is what we all want when we travel to a new locale!
20 Must Know London Tips:
Getting Around
- Get an Oyster Card or Use Contactless Payment – The cheapest way to travel on public transport is by using an Oyster card or a contactless bank card (Apple Pay and Google Pay work too). Avoid buying single paper tickets as they are much more expensive.
- Mind the Gap and Stand on the Right – When using the Tube (London Underground), always stand on the right side of the escalator to let people pass on the left.
- Download Citymapper – This app is a lifesaver for navigating London’s complex transport system, often providing better route suggestions than Google Maps.
- Avoid the Tube During Rush Hour – Try to avoid traveling between 7:30-9:30 AM and 5:00-7:00 PM to escape the worst of the crowds. Buses and walking might be better options during these times.
- Black Cabs vs. Ubers – Traditional black cabs are iconic but pricey. Uber, Bolt, or FreeNow are cheaper alternatives for ridesharing.
Money & Expenses
- Contactless Payment is King – London is largely cashless, so credit and debit cards (especially contactless ones) are widely accepted. Carrying cash is optional.
- Budget for High Prices – London is expensive. Save money by eating at street markets, using happy hours for drinks, and taking advantage of free attractions.
- Tipping Isn’t Mandatory – A service charge is often included in restaurant bills (12.5% is standard). If not, tipping 10-15% is polite but not required.
Sightseeing & Attractions
- Most Museums Are Free – The British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern, and many others offer free entry, though donations are appreciated.
- Book Major Attractions in Advance – Popular spots like the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, and the Tower of London can have long lines. Booking ahead saves time and money.
- Consider a London Pass – If you plan on visiting multiple attractions, the London Pass or Go City London Pass can save you money.
- Watch the Changing of the Guard Early – Get to Buckingham Palace at least 30-45 minutes early for a good spot (check the schedule, as it doesn’t happen daily).
- Explore Beyond Central London – Areas like Camden, Notting Hill, Greenwich, and Shoreditch offer amazing markets, culture, and food beyond the main tourist spots.
- Walk Along the Thames – A scenic walk from Westminster to Tower Bridge takes you past the London Eye, Shakespeare’s Globe, and St. Paul’s Cathedral.
Food & Drinks
- Try a Sunday Roast and Full English Breakfast – These are British food staples, best enjoyed at traditional pubs.
- Pub Culture: Order at the Bar – In most pubs, you order and pay at the bar rather than waiting for table service.
- Afternoon Tea Needs a Reservation – If you want to experience this British tradition, book in advance, especially at famous spots like The Ritz or Claridge’s.
Weather & Packing
- Always Carry an Umbrella – London weather is unpredictable, and rain can come out of nowhere, even in summer.
- Dress in Layers – Temperatures can change throughout the day, so layering is key. Even in summer, bring a light jacket.
General Tips
- Be Polite & Mind the Queues – Londoners take queuing (lining up) seriously. Always wait your turn, whether at a bus stop, shop, or attraction.

I really did enjoy reading the interesting items on the list. The sim card and plug switch ones are very helpful. Where do we find eggs if not in the refrigerated section? haha.
I know and London isn't the only place that doesn't refrigerate the eggs - Indonesia and Nigeria don't either. Now that I think about it, maybe the US is really the minority on this!
And bring ugg boots... even in summer 😀 It's always cold!!
OHHHH, thank you for that!

I love London so much!!! I've been coming for over 30 years (as I have family there) and even thought we *KNOW* it rains ALL THE TIME haha, we didn't bring an umbrella on our most recent trip and I ended up buying on from the IWM. I remember the first time I saw eggs in the cupboard too and I freaked out haha. Can't wait to come back!
HAHAHA, love it! Yes, it seems a lot of places don't keep them in the fridge like in the US; I wonder why? Yes, I need to get a new small carry umbrella as I left my last one in a taxi in Lisbon!

I Love the bullet point of tips. It is a good reminder to carry layers, check out free museums, and no need to tip at restaurants. Also - generally good to avoid discussing politics. Great post!
Thank you and yes, you're correct on the politics - especially during these trying times!
You forgot about the stab vest, wear one, even in the shower! The danger is real!
